I’m Katie and I am a behavioural therapist at Rainbow. I have been doing this role for over 2 years now!.
I decided to pursue this role as a career path during my psychology undergraduate as we learnt about ABA! I really enjoyed this module and loved the passion and pride that my lecturers spoke about their work with. I have always wanted to work with children and felt that ABA was a wonderful route for me to do this, allowing me to have a compassionate role in a child’s learning and progression. I also enjoy having pride in my work and find that this role allows me to see the progress my clients make and feel proud of not only them but my work. I love being able to share these wow moments with parents! This role also allows me to have a fun and engaging relationship with my clients and I love being able to pair with the children I work with! Another reason that I wanted to pursue this role was the chance to personalise and individualise learning and targets to different children, giving them the best chance to learn and progress at whatever they do!
I previously worked with SEN children in a nursery school and this taught me a lot about not only working with SEN children but children in general and school staff. It gave me lots of ideas and inspiration for educational activities to do with my clients. This role also taught me a lot about child development and this has helped me alot in my current role when writing targets for my clients.
I am currently working towards getting my BCBA! Rainbow has been great at offering me support and training to work towards this. As I work towards this goal, I feel that I am learning more and more about how to support clients in a wide variety of ways. As I progress towards this, I am also learning about how to write and monitor client programs, data and targets!
I am passionate about working with children and their families and pairing with my clients. I feel that I can create a safe space for my clients where they can be supported whilst having fun. I enjoy being able to find exciting and engaging ways to work on targets with my clients. Within this, I love to learn about my clients and their likes and interests so that I can personalise our work to be as reinforcing and exciting for them as possible! I am a patient and compassionate person and this is something I bring with me to my role. I am a good listener too, for both my client and their families and I pride myself on advocating for my clients.
Reflection
I love working with Rainbow as I feel that they offer a community. I know that there is always someone to go to if I need additional support. Rainbow always encourages a fun, engaging and child centred approach which I value. I love that Rainbow provides opportunities for learning and progression for me as well so I always feel like I’m developing.
